955-space Cardiff city centre car park still open after planned closure date

The NCP car park in Dumfries Place escaped closure last week but the future of the site remains unknown

A huge city centre car park in Cardiff which was expected to close down remains open amid continuing talks over its future.

Last month one of the UK’s largest car park operators went into administration putting 340 sites across the UK at risk of closure.

National Car Parks (NCP) subsequently revealed 20 of its car parks were “commercially unviable” and would close on Friday, March 27.

Among the list of initial sites earmarked for closure was Cardiff Dumfries Place NCP in the city centre.

However the site, which has 955 bays, has remained open and trading as discussions continue over the site’s future.

NCP hired administrators PwC to determine the future of the company allowing NCP to continue to trade as normal while undertaking an assessment of the options for the business. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here.

Announcing the collapse of the parking operator PwC said: “The company’s performance has deteriorated over a number of years post Covid-19 as demand for parking has not recovered to historic levels, particularly across city centre and commuter locations.

“Continued shifts in commuting and customer driving patterns have impacted site occupancy while the high concentration of long-term inflexible leases has meant the company has been unable to reduce costs in line with revenue or to exit loss-making sites resulting in ongoing trading losses.”

The closure of all of the sites, including the 22 across Wales, is possible and the jobs of 682 workers are also at risk.

However after initially including Cardiff Dumfries Place in the list of locations closing on March 27 PwC has said the location remains open while “negotiations with the landlord” take place.

A PwC spokesman said: “We are in negotiations with the landlord for Cardiff Dumfries Place so this site will not be closing on March 27, 2026, and will remain open to customers.”
