Change for Black members’ conference

by martyn jones

After discussions between the national Black members’ committee, UNISON’s equalities team, and the conferences department, the national Black members’ conference will move from its long-standing January slot to a new springtime date in 2026.

This decision reflects UNISON’s core values:

  • Equality – breaking down barriers and ensuring Black members can take part on an equal footing.
  • Democracy – making space for more voices to be heard, shaping the direction of our union.
  • Participation – encouraging stronger involvement by placing our conference in a more accessible and welcoming time of year.
  • Solidarity – acting together on the issues raised by our Black members and delivering meaningful change.

By moving to the spring, the union is expecting wider engagement, safer travel, and a more vibrant atmosphere for debate, campaigning and collective action.

We look forward to gathering with Black members with renewed energy in spring 2026.
