People have been astonished after a woman from South Wales devised an absolutely brilliant method of saving money on airport baggage charges. Additional luggage fees can add a substantial amount to the cost of any journey, whether it’s for work or leisure.
However, one woman has discovered an incredible way to transport everything she needed to her destination for merely £2.29. Pontyclun-based business coach and motivational speaker Laura Poole shared how she had booked a flight from Bristol Airport to Glasgow last week for £25 – only to discover supplementary charges for her baggage would be an additional £30 – more than the cost of the flight itself.
But she devised a clever alternative method of getting all her luggage to her destination for just £2.29. Writing on Facebook, Laura said: “I’m flying Bristol to Glasgow on Sunday. My flight cost £25… cabin baggage fees £30. That’s more than my flight!!!”
“Can I afford baggage fees? Absolutely. Will I pay them? F*** no! (On principle).”
Alongside a photograph of herself holding a large Lidl bag filled with her clothes, she continued: “Packed up my gym bag with 60 per cent of the clothes I’m taking, shoved it in an Lidl bag then dropped it off at an InPost locker to be posted up to Dundee and will arrive at the Tesco Express near my hotel the day I arrive. £2.29! And I have one less bag to carry.
“I did this the end of last year too. It’s so good! I’m quietly protesting baggage fees.”
In a follow-up video posted from her hotel room in Dundee, Laura confirmed her parcel had arrived safely, reports Bristol Live. Courier service InPost operates a system allowing customers to deposit items at dedicated lockers, which are accessible 24 hours a day. Packages are collected by couriers and can be delivered to another locker, just as Laura did.
People were astounded by Laura’s approach. Aimee Williamson-Cary said: “This is genius! I’m flying to Edinburgh and I hate sleeping without my own pillow. I’ll be posting myself some clothes that I can miss for a few days!”
And Jill Cruikshank wrote: “I fly to/from Bristol and baggage is more than the cost of the flight. Have got underseat bag packing down to a fine art, but the InPost locker idea is genius!”
Hannah Cornwall said: “I love this – I have packing down to a fine art (stuffed pockets, stuffed neck cushion, a really nifty under seat bag and a duty free bag). But I’ll certainly remember this. Next hack needs to be drinks on the airplane – another rip off. £3.75 for a mixer (to go with my carried on miniatures of gin).”
Others contributed their own travel tips. Amanda Dunstan said: “My daughter is at Glasgow uni, we live in Croydon. She flies or if she sees a cheap train ticket goes by train to use the time to study.
“She posts what she is bringing down, and posts it back. She’s been doing this for two years. Nothing has gone missing and it has saved a fortune. It is usually the equivalent of two suitcases! Costs less than £30.”
And Geoff Roberson commented: “I only travel with my free under-seat bag plus the multiple layers of clothes that I’m wearing. I put the extra clothes on at the gate then immediately take them off when I’ve boarded the plane and place in a folding rucksack. Board the plane with one bag and leave with two.”
