Leah Selby, owner of Leah Claire Hair in Cowbridge, is a finalist in the Best Home Salon category at the UK Hair & Beauty Awards 2026.
The salon operates from a garden salon in the Vale of Glamorgan and focuses on luxury blonding, balayage and extensions.
Ms Selby said: “What a way to enter 2026.
“To have my business recognised on a national level after years of hard work is an amazing feeling, and I’m incredibly grateful to my loyal clients, family and everyone who has supported me along the way.”
Her hairdressing journey began at age 15 when she started sweeping floors in a salon and quickly developed a passion for the industry.
After nearly 10 years working in salons, she launched her own business in Cowbridge to offer a personalised, one-to-one client experience.
Ms Selby said: “My goal was always to create a luxury, personalised space where clients could enjoy a one-to-one experience while receiving high-quality hair services.”
Alongside building her business, she is also mum to her one-year-old son, Zeo.
She said: “Becoming a mother gave me an even stronger motivation to build something successful that I can be proud of.
“Running my own salon allows me to continue pursuing the career I love while also being present for my son as he grows up.”
Ms Selby credits her partner for being a key source of encouragement throughout the process of launching and growing her salon.
She now hopes her story will inspire others considering self-employment.
Ms Selby said: “If anyone is thinking about taking this next step towards being your own boss, my advice is DO IT! And don’t look back.”
