A savvy shopper has shared how you can make supermarket bought daffodils last ‘three times as long’ by doing one simple switch when buying them – saving you money in the long run
Spring has arrived, meaning our supermarkets are filled with bunches of cheerful yellow daffodils – ideal for adding brightness to your home without breaking the bank. The brilliant aspect is that these flowers, which symbolise St David’s Day and Easter, and are celebrated for their distinctive form and uplifting colour, are usually inexpensive.

Daffodils typically survive 5 to 10 days in a vase, with 7 days being the norm, assuming they receive proper care, according to Johnson’s Seeds. You can extend their lifespan by keeping them away from direct sunlight, instead positioning them in a cooler spot, whilst also regularly refreshing the water in the vase.
However, one savvy shopper has now revealed her preferred techniques for making these daffodils last considerably longer, ultimately helping you save money.
Posting on TikTok, an inventive woman called Mrs Clare Hoops, who frequently shares clips of her upcycling projects and creating distinctive decorations and arrangements using daffodils.
In the clip, she’s shown filming herself inside a Tesco supermarket, as she proceeded to hold up a bunch of daffodils, which the supermarket was retailing for £1.
She then shook her finger in a negative gesture, before revealing her ingenious money-saving advice. Instead, she proceeded to demonstrate an alternative option.
She picked up a pot of daffodils, which carried a price tag of £1.50. Whilst it’s marginally more expensive than the bouquet, Clare continued to maintain it represents better value for money, noting they will endure ‘triple as long’ as the bunch that’s placed into a vase.
“Buy the pots of daffodils not the bunches and save a few £££,” she stated in the post’s caption.
The footage then transitioned to Clare at home, having transferred the paper pot of daffodils into a ceramic container, prepared to be showcased in her residence.
Compared to bouquets stem-cut daffodils, potted daffodils will thrive in direct sunlight, while also requiring frequent watering and feeding with high-potassium fertilizer (like tomato food) when shoots appear. They will also last for years to come, if taken care of properly. Simply deadhead flowers to save energy, but allow foliage to turn yellow naturally (6-8 weeks) before removing to ensure blooms next year.
Clare wasn’t alone in this view, as the comments section rapidly filled with individuals sharing their own accounts of purchasing a pot of daffodils rather than the bunches.
