The advice comes as prices and bills soar
A money-saving expert says parents can save a lot of cash at Easter with thrifty life-hacks. Spending on Easter has reached £1.3billion a year, but the cost of living crisis is seeing families try to cut back as prices and bills go up.
Lynn Beattie, also known as ‘Mrs Mummypenny’, says you can save money by avoiding shop-bought items at Easter and making them at home instead – doubling up as craft activities that children can get involved in.
The advice comes as some popular chocolate eggs have increased in price by over 40% per 100g while shrinking in size, as rising cocoa costs impact manufacturers. This, combined with wider pressure on household budgets, is prompting families to rethink how they approach the holiday.
Lynn said: “Families still want to make Easter special, but there’s a shift towards doing more with less. Crafting, decorating and spending time together is replacing some of the more expensive habits.”
She recently shared how she created a full set of Easter crafts and decorations for around £50 using supplies from Temu – a potential saving of up to 87% compared to average seasonal spending. Egg decorating kits, wreath-making supplies, and ready-made bonnet sets can help parents recreate traditional Easter experiences – without the higher price tag.
Lynn said: “Children don’t remember how much you spent – they remember what you did together. Simple things like painting eggs or making decorations are often what make the day special.”
