Gas leak stops major resurfacing work on Cardiff road

by Martyn Jones

There have been complaints about the state of the road that is a main route used by commuters getting to and from the M4

Planned resurfacing works on a major Cardiff road have been temporarily put on hold after a gas leak was reported in the area.

Workers meant to be resurfacing Station Road, in Llandaff North, on the night of Sunday, April 12, had to stop work for safety reasons after reporting the smell of gas in the air.

Locals and commuters have had to deal with the dire state of the road for months, which serves as a major thoroughfare running through Llandaff North, connecting Whitchurch with Gabalfa and the M4.

Thousands of pounds have already been spent on resurfacing and fixing potholes on the road in recent years and now it needs to be fixed again but Cardiff council has yet to provide a new date for the resurfacing. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here.

A spokesman for the council said: “Station Road was due to be resurfaced on Sunday, April 12, which would have required the removal of the existing road surface and its replacement with new materials.

“When our contractor was on site the smell of gas was identified so Wales & West Utilities were notified and the planned works could not take place on health and safety grounds.

“As the road closure was already in place the council took the opportunity to carry out some temporary non‑excavation works on the road to provide limited improvements to the road surface until the full resurfacing can take place.

“A new date is currently being organised with the contractor to carry out the required resurfacing work and further information will be provided in due course.”

A spokespman for Wales & West Utilities said: “We sent a team of engineers who carried out several safety checks and discovered a small leak on a gas service pipe in the area.

“The team made the area safe and have now completed a full repair. There has been no impact on gas supplies in the area.

“Contacting us is always the advice we give if anyone smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak, or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning. We can be contacted on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help day or night.”

The state of the road has been in a dire condition for months with some drivers avoiding the area completely over concerns for their cars.

More than £20,000 was spent fixing the stretch of road less than three years ago and now it needs to be done again.

In 2013 Cardiff Council carried out resurfacing work on Station Road at a cost of £20,458.

Localised surfacing work took place on the road in 2021 costing £18,575.

More recently resurfacing work took place on parts of Station Road in 2023 as part of a localised improvement works programme costing the council £21,400.
