Home, based in Penarth and run by Michelin-starred chef James Sommerin and his family, has quickly earned national attention for its intimate setting and surprise tasting menus.
Here are five things you should know about the award-winning dining experience.
- MICHELIN-STARRED FAMILY VENTURE
Home is the latest restaurant from James Sommerin, who has held Michelin stars at three different venues during his career.
He runs the restaurant with his wife Lou and their daughters Georgia, Angharad, and Elin, making it a true family affair.
Mr Sommerin and Georgia work side by side in the kitchen, while Lou leads the front-of-house team, creating an atmosphere described as warm, personal, and full of pride.
- A SECRETIVE ENTRANCE
Hidden behind thick curtains on Stanwell Road, the restaurant can only be accessed by pressing a doorbell on arrival.
This detail adds a sense of exclusivity and theatre before diners even step inside.
The dining room features just seven tables in a dramatic, low-lit space, creating a setting that is both intimate and immersive.

- THE SURPRISE MENU
Home is known for its ever-changing surprise tasting menus, which spotlight seasonal Welsh and British ingredients from local producers.
Guests receive an envelope containing the evening’s menu but can choose whether or not to look before each course arrives.
Dishes are modern and thoughtfully crafted, with one much-loved highlight being the menu-ending cinnamon bun, inspired by Mr Sommerin’s memories of his grandmother’s house.

- RELAXED, NOT FORMAL
Despite its Michelin star and tasting menu format, the restaurant aims for a relaxed, homely vibe.
Guests are encouraged to unwind and enjoy the evening as an experience, not just a meal.
An open kitchen lets diners watch the chefs at work, while the front-of-house team is frequently praised for being friendly and knowledgeable.
- BOOKINGS (AND BUDGETING) RECOMMENDED
With only a few tables and growing national attention, booking well in advance is essential, especially on weekends.
Home is open for dinner Wednesday to Saturday, and offers lunch on Fridays and Saturdays.
The restaurant is closed from Sunday to Tuesday.
While the pricing reflects its fine-dining status, many diners consider it a destination worth saving for.
