5 things you should know about Cefn Mably in Penarth

1. It closed — and then came back under new ownership

The Cefn Mably briefly went dark in early 2025, with locals asking questions online about whether it had shut for good. The answer came in the autumn when entrepreneur Mike Armstrong — who goes by the nickname “The Welsh Dragon” — took over the venue and relaunched it as Cefn Mably Bar, Hotel and Event Venue. He has since invested in transforming the pub, including plans to turn part of the car park into a sun terrace.

2. It’s now as much an events venue as it is a pub

Under Armstrong’s stewardship, the Cefn Mably has repositioned itself as a hub for live music, business networking, open mic nights and food pop-ups. Thursday evenings are now a regular open mic night from 7:30pm, and the venue hosts live music events most weekends. It has also hosted business networking events for the South Wales business community.

3. The Sunday roast is back — but you need to book

One of the most popular features of the relaunched Cefn Mably is its Sunday lunch, which is served all day during kitchen hours but must be pre-booked in advance via WhatsApp. The food offering runs Thursday to Sunday, with rotating food pop-ups bringing variety throughout the week. The pub describes itself as a community local with an emphasis on fresh, home-cooked food.

4. The kitchen got a clean bill of health from inspectors

Food safety officers visited the Cefn Mably in October 2025 — shortly after the new management took over — and rated it Good across all three areas inspected: hygienic food handling, cleanliness of facilities and management of food safety. That gives diners and visitors confidence that the kitchen relaunch has been done properly.

5. It has six letting rooms — and you can now book a live music weekend break

Upstairs, the Cefn Mably has six letting bedrooms that can be configured as doubles, twins or family rooms. New owner Mike Armstrong has packaged these up into live music weekend break deals, which include two nights’ accommodation, live music, breakfast and evening meals for two adults. It’s a novel offer for a community pub — and one that sets it apart from anywhere else in the area.
