Rwcola, pronounced ROO-ko-la, is a fast-rising Welsh-Italian eatery based in Barry’s Goodsheds Container Village.
Here are five things to know about the popular spot:
- The name is a Welsh-Italian mashup
Rwcola takes its name from the Italian word for rocket, rucola, but with a Welsh-language twist.
This blend of cultures runs through the heart of the restaurant, shaping everything from the menu to the ethos — Italian cooking with a strong Welsh influence.
- The founder is Wales’ only AccademiaPizzaioli-certified instructor
Matteo Monacelli, who holds a degree in Food Science and Nutrition, is the only certified instructor in Wales from the internationally recognised AccademiaPizzaioli, a renowned Italian pizza academy.
His culinary experience spans Italy, France, Spain, Poland, Norway and the UK.
Pasta dishes on the menu are based on his own family recipes.
He runs the restaurant alongside Eryk and Lukasz.

- The pizza dough is made fresh daily
Each day, Rwcola prepares its pizza dough using just five ingredients: Italian Caputo flour, yeast, water, salt and extra virgin olive oil.
Caputo flour is considered the gold standard for Neapolitan pizza.
