The Barry Dock RNLI said lifeguards worked in “glorious sunshine” to keep beachgoers safe along the coast, with volunteers also on hand to provide water safety advice.
A spokesman for Barry Dock RNLI said: “When the beach looks as packed as this, it takes a full team to help keep everybody safe.
“A huge thank you to our RNLI lifeguards who had an extremely busy weekend on the beach in the glorious sunshine, helping thousands and thousands of people enjoy the coast safely.”
The charity also thanked RNLI ambassador Bro Coffi for hosting members of the volunteer water safety team, Lucianne and Ann, outside the coffee box on Bank Holiday Monday.
The pair spent time speaking to people about staying safe around the water.
They gave advice on cold water shock, staying within your depth, and the importance of swimming between the red and yellow flags.
The spokesperson said: “The pair spent time speaking to lots and lots of people about staying safe around the water, sharing advice on everything from cold water shock and staying within your depth, to choosing a lifeguarded beach and swimming between the red and yellow flags.
“They also handed out RNLI water safety information and chatted to families about what to do if things go wrong in the water”.
HM Coastguard and the team at NCI Nells Point also worked alongside the RNLI throughout the weekend in an effort to keep people safe on the beach and around the coastline.
Barry Dock RNLI are also taking this opportunity to remind the public of the Float to Live advice if you get into difficulty in the water.
This includes:
- Tilt your head back and put your ears in the water
- Stay calm and try to control your breathing
- Make like a starfish and move your hands and feet gently to help you stay afloat
- Don’t worry if your legs sink – we all float differently
- Raise your hand and call for help
Barry Dock RNLI are also reminding the public of what to do if you see somebody struggling in the water.
They are urging people to call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
