John Palmer, aged 53, of Quarella Street, Barry pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol on April 19 on Cardiff Road in Dinas Powys.
Palmer was found to have 58 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, which is above the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
He had been behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Insignia when stopped, Cardiff Magistrates’ Court was told.
Palmer admitted the charge at the earliest opportunity and magistrates took his guilty plea into account during sentencing.
They imposed a 12‑month driving disqualification, to be reduced by three months if the defendant successfully completes a drink‑drive rehabilitation course by December 20.
In addition to the ban, Palmer was fined £669.
He was also ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs and a victim surcharge of £268.
