It’s almost time for the Sandman to enter Wales as Cardiff gears up for Metallica’s M72 huge gig at the Principality Stadium on Sunday, June 28. Before the serious business of moshing can begin fans have to get into the city and this handy guide provides plenty of information to plan ahead so they can attend the gig with ease and concentrate on the music.
Below you’ll find the full list of road closures in the city on the day, June 28, parking information as well as travel details for public transport such as bus, train and coach – all handy for those travelling into Cardiff just on the day, too.

Metallica M72 World Tour
The gig will take place on Sunday, May 28 at the Principality Stadium (Cardiff CF10 1NS). The M72 World Tour’s 2026 itinerary will continue the hallowed No Repeat Weekend tradition, with each night of the two-show stands featuring entirely different setlists and support lineups. Support will come from Gojira and Knocked Loose.
Where’s the M72 Pop-Up Shop?
The official M72 World Tour merch store will be set up at DEPOT. Get exclusive Cardiff merch, limited edition items and an M72 Fan Card for a chance to win Snake Pit passes. The address is: Unit 8, Curran Road, CF10 5DF. The opening hours are as follows:
- June 27 & 28 — 8:30am–8pm
- June 29 — 8:30am–6pm
Road closures
From 7am, Scott Road and Park Street will be closed because of the need to prepare Gate 5 and protect queuing fans.
For all the concerts, the following roads will be closed as part of the full city centre road closure which will take place at 3pm until midnight.
- Kingsway from its junction with North Road to its junction with Duke Street.
- Cowbridge Road East from its junction with Cathedral Road to its junction with Westgate Street.
- Tudor Street from its junction with Clare Road to its junction with Wood Street (access for residents and traders will be permitted via Fitzhammon Embankment).
- Plantagenet Street and Beauchamp Street from their junctions with Despenser Place to their junctions with Tudor Street (access for residents and traders will be permitted).
- The following roads will be closed in their entirety: Duke Street, Castle St, High Street, St Mary Street, Caroline Street, Wood Street, Central Square, Westgate Street, Quay Street, Guildhall Place, Golate, Park Street, Havelock Street and Scott Road.
- Station Terrace and Guildford Street from the junction with Newport Road to the junction with Churchill Way will be access for buses only during the times of the road closures. This is to ensure that there is reliable access for buses to the satellite points in Churchill Way.
- Additionally, Penarth Road will be closed 30 minutes before the concerts finish and for up to an hour after they finish on safety grounds – for train passengers arriving and departing from the train station.
- Station Terrace will also close for a short period to allow Queen Street Station to operate safely for one hour and 30 minutes after the end of the event (approximately 10.15pm – 11.45pm).
Additional information:
Access to part of the Civic Centre will be controlled throughout the day, with access allowed only for event parking, limited commuter parking, loading and access to private car parks.
Roads affected include King Edward VII Avenue, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road.
Trains
Great Western Railway (GWR)
GWR will run additional services to help customers get home after the summer concerts. Extra trains will operate from Cardiff Central railway station to Swansea, Newport, Bristol and Swindon, with plenty of parking available at station car parks.
Trains are, however, expected to be very busy immediately after the concerts and a queueing system will be in place outside the station to help people board trains safely.
Those travelling from further afield should check connecting services, and the time of their last train home, at www.gwr.com/check
Transport for Wales (TfW)
TfW will provide additional capacity where possible on routes to and from Cardiff for the Take That and Metallica concerts. Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow plenty of time for their journey.
A full queuing system will be in place with passengers travelling to the Valleys or the Vale of Glamorgan directed to Cardiff Queen Street station after the event. All other queues including Ebbw Vale and Maesteg will be at Cardiff Central station.
Queuing will start from 9:45pm at both stations with the accessibility queue available at Cardiff Central.
Cardiff Bus Interchange will close in line with road closures and car park closures will also be in place at Cardiff Central station. More information available here: Events | Transport for Wales
Pre and post-event revenue checks will take place at both stations and passengers should purchase their rail ticket before entering a queuing system.
A reminder that pay as you go is currently available on TfW and Cross-Country services across the South Wales Metro network (Not available on GWR services).
Passengers using pay as you go payment method should tap in at their departure station and then tap out using same payment method via the dedicated pay as you go revenue lanes when exiting at Cardiff Central. TfW volunteers will be available to assist with tapping in and out.
Park & Ride facilities
The park and ride facility for this event will be at the car park by Vindico Arena (ice rink) on International Drive in the International Sports Village, Cardiff Bay – CF11 0JS.
The drop off point in the city centre is on Tresillian Way.
The car park will open at 10am, with the first bus leaving at 10.30am and last bus leaving the city centre at midnight.
The cost for both events is £15 for each car payable on the day.
Civic Centre Event Day Parking (cars and coaches)
Getting there: Exit Junction 32 of the M4, head south on the A470 towards the city centre and follow signage to the civic centre.
Cost: £20 payable on the day for cars and £30 for coaches – card payments are also now available.
Parking time: The car park will open at 8am and closes at 12 midnight.
Event Day Parking at Sophia Gardens (cars)
Getting there: Exit junction 32 off the M4, head south towards Cathedral Road and follow signage for Sophia Gardens.
Cost: £20 for cars and £30 for coaches – card payments are now available.
Parking time: Car park opens at 8.00am and closes at 12 midnight.
Please note: Sophia Gardens car park will be staffed until 7.00pm all vehicles are left on site at the owner’s risk. Cardiff Council will not be held responsible for any theft or damage to motor vehicles or personal possessions. Any vehicles left in the car park after closing time will be fined.
Other car parks in Cardiff city centre are found at North Road Car Parks, St David’s Shopping Centre, John Lewis, Capitol Shopping Centre, and NCP (Adam Street, Dumfries Place and Greyfriars Road).
There is also a Q-Park – where you book ahead for parking – this is located in Cardiff Bay – from there it is about a 20-25 minute walk into the city centre, a short taxi trip, or you can jump on the number 6 Baycar bus – up-to-date times for that, here.

Local buses:
Bus services will be diverted while the city centre road closures are in place. Please visit the relevant bus operator’s website for more information about your specific bus routes.

National Express: National Express coaches will use Sophia Gardens as usual.
Can you cycle or walk?
The cycleways and the pop-up cycleways within the road closure area will remain open for cyclists to use during the events, but due to the number of people expected to attend these concerts, cyclists are asked to take due care and attention.
The road closures apply to all motor vehicles of any kind, but not to bicycles with pedals.
Those who live locally in Cardiff may want to travel by bicycle or walk. Research shows us that 52% of car trips made in the Welsh capital are less than 5km. This is a distance that can be comfortably cycled in 20 minutes.
We also know that 28% of Cardiff residents who currently do not cycle would like to do so.
When the roads are congested this makes cycling an even more attractive option as travel by bicycle would be quicker than a car during rush hours or during big events.
Disabled parking
Disabled drivers are advised to use Sophia Gardens. Disabled parking is also available at various private car parks.

Taxis
For all the concerts, St Mary Street taxi rank (outside the former House of Fraser building) will close at 3pm and will re-open at midnight.
