South Wales Fire and Rescue Service received a call at around 8.30am yesterday (Thursday, June 11) to reports of a fire at the Hare and Hounds on Maendy Road in Aberthin.
The fire located between the ground and first floor was fought by crews, appliances, a water bowser and an aerial hydraulic platform from Bridgend, Llantwit Major, Barry, Pencoed, Kenfig Hill, Cardiff Central, and Ely.
The Fire Service say that all persons were evacuated and the fire was extinguished using four breathing apparatus, two 45m jets, one safety jet, two hose reel jets, a thermal imaging camera and a positive pressure ventilation.
Local figures have spoken up about the blaze, commending the pub for its “warm atmosphere” and “the quality of its food.”
MS for Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg Andrew RT Davies has expressed his worry at sadness at the incident.
Mr Davies said: “I’m deeply saddened and worried to hear of reports of a fire at the Hare and Hounds.
“The team have worked so hard to create a successful and popular pub at the heart of Aberthin.
“My thoughts are with them all at this difficult time.”
The Hare and Hounds have also taken to social media to share the difficult news.
They said; “The most important thing is that everyone is safe, and we’re hugely grateful to South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and everyone who helped.
“We’re still taking it all in and working out what comes next, so please bear with us. The Hare & Hounds has stood at the heart of this village for over 300 years, and with the support of this incredible community, it will again.”
They thanked supporters for their support and promised that they will share more information when they are able.
