Newydd Housing blasted over Barry estate rubbish problem

by David Jones

Plaid Cymru councillor Millie Collins has criticised Newydd Housing Association over persistent waste issues between Avocet Court and Kingsland Crescent in Barry, describing them as “mounds of rubbish” and an “ongoing problem for many years.”

She said: “For years, Newydd have been unable to meet their responsibilities to manage bin-stores around the estate and keep the area clean and tidy.

“Local people frequently contact me or go online to complain because they think that it’s the council’s job to clear these mounds of rubbish, but the bin-store belongs to Newydd, and they have the responsibility of keeping it clear.

“Whenever it is cleared, the problems start again within a few days.

“Clearly whatever they are doing is just not working.

“Residents don’t deserve to see these piles of rubbish stacked up on the side of the street over and over again.

“I am asking Newydd to get around the table with the Vale Council to sort out a lasting solution to this.”

A spokesperson for Newydd Housing Association said the group understood the frustrations and was taking steps to address the long-running waste and fly-tipping issues.

The spokesperson said: “We understand the frustration residents at Kingsland Crescent are feeling about persistent fly-tipping and on-going waste problems on the estate.

“We have been working closely with tenants and Vale of Glamorgan Council to tackle these issues.

“CCTV has now been installed at the bin stores to deter misuse and help identify anyone responsible.

“Alongside the council’s regular three-weekly collections, we’ve put in place additional clearances through an external waste contractor.

“This means rubbish is now being collected every one and a half weeks.

“Our local Housing Officer is also carrying out weekly inspections and arranging further collections when needed.

“Plans to redevelop and replace the bin stores have received outline planning approval from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and we will keep tenant updated as this progresses.

“This remains a high priority for us.

“It’s being regularly reviewed to make sure we take the right steps to stop this unacceptable behaviour and improve the environment for tenants.”
