Cardiff Airport supporting the Stay With Friends campaign

by David Jones

The airport is backing the “Stay Aware, Stay Safe, Stay Together” campaign in memory of Tom Channon, a young man from Rhoose, who travelled to Magaluf, Spain, to celebrate the end of his A levels with friends, but died after a fall while trying to find his hotel alone.

Angela Hewitson, terminal manager at Cardiff Airport, said: “We are extremely proud to support Tom’s campaign, which delivers an important message about staying safe whilst travelling abroad.

“Through the dedication of John and Ceri, Tom’s legacy continues to make a positive difference by helping to raise awareness among young travellers and their families.

“Posters displayed around the airport include a QR code linking to a range of practical safety resources, developed collaboratively by Tom’s parents and his former sixth form college, St David’s Catholic College in Cardiff.

“The resources offer valuable guidance to help young people stay safe and look after one another whilst overseas.

“We encourage all passengers to take a moment to reflect on the campaign’s message, ‘Stay Aware, Stay Safe, Stay Together,’ and to look out for one another whilst enjoying their travels.”

Cardiff Airport is working with Tom’s parents, John and Ceri Channon, to promote the campaign through a series of posters displayed throughout key footfall areas in check-in and departures.

The posters include a QR code linking to a range of practical safety resources.

Since Tom’s death, his parents have worked to raise awareness in the hope of preventing similar tragedies for other families.

Efforts are focused on reaching younger travellers, particularly those heading abroad with friends for the first time.
