Barry Dock RNLI explained how important wearing the right gear is to stay safe – even in the hot weather.
RNLI volunteers issued the warning as the Vale of Glamorgan endures the third heatwave of the summer, during which crew members still wore full protective equipment during a training exercise despite soaring temperatures.
RNLI volunteers stressed the importance of wearing lifejackets, appropriate footwear, and sun protection for all water activities.
They also advised carrying a fully charged mobile phone in a waterproof pouch, and having a way of sharing your location with someone ashore.
A spokesperson for Barry Dock RNLI said: “During the recent heatwave when temperatures climbed into the 30s, our volunteer lifeboat crew were still wearing all the kit needed to take part in an exercise safely… including those famous yellow wellies!
“Whether you’re heading out for a day of sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding or fishing, the right kit can make all the difference if something goes wrong.
“What you need will depend on the activity, but before you head out, think about: a correctly fitted lifejacket or buoyancy aid; a fully charged mobile phone in a waterproof pouch (or another suitable means of calling for help); appropriate clothing and footwear for the conditions; and plenty of drinking water and sun protection”.
They said the choice of equipment will vary depending on the activity, but basic safety items remain essential.
The spokesperson added: “It might not be the coolest outfit on the hottest day of the year, but wearing the right kit could save your life.
“And remember, if you see anyone in trouble in the water or along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard”.
Anyone who spots someone in difficulty on the water or along the coast should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
