Step back in time and see what life was like in the medieval period at Cosmeston Medieval Village in Penarth
The temperatures continue to rise as we head into the weekend, and the beaches and pubs will probably end up being rammed.
So instead, why not try something a bit different?
Located in Penarth, Cosmeston Medieval village transports visitors back to the year 1350, offering a glimpse into the lives of a community that died centuries ago.
The site was excavated by the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust in the early 1980s and following the discovery, the local authority reconstructed the 14th century settlement.
Visitors can step back in time by joining a costumed guided tour, or you can take a self-guided tour using a provided portable audio system.
Guided tours will show you what medieval life would have been like. For example, what their weapons and armour looked like, what food they ate, and how they were punished.
The reconstructed village features 14th century cottages with thatched roofs and a barn where livestock would have been kept. All of which can be entered to see what medieval interiors look like.
The grounds also feature a variety of green spaces to explore.
You can also take a trip into the museum located on the grounds, which hosts a range of artefacts from the time period.
It’s a day out for all ages but provides an immersive learning experience for younger children.

The village also includes a range of amenities like a picnic area for you and the family to have some lunch, and free to use toilets. Entry to the site is also free and is wheelchair accessible.
Once you’re all done, you then have the vast open space of Cosmeston park to explore, with a playground for kids and an open lake to walk your dog around.
It all culminates in a day of fresh air and learning for all the family.
