Harry Poulton is currently back in the UK after leaving for Benidorm seven years ago and recent shopping trip made him realise that life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be in Spain
A Brit who made the move to Benidorm seven years ago but is currently back in Wales has admitted to making an unexpected realisation whilst shopping. Harry Poulton fell in love with the Alicante region as a teenager and began living there aged 18. Since then, he has become a travel content creator on the Costa Blanca, providing advice for those who are interested in making the same move he did, and recommendations to others visiting Benidorm on holiday.
“Benidorm isn’t as cheap as I always thought it was,” he began in a TikTok video recorded in a Lidl supermarket.
Harry, 25, continued: “The one thing I have noticed that when comparing an English [or British] supermarket to Spanish one… I always thought they [Spanish] were super, super cheap.”
His trip back to the UK changed his perception, however. After acknowledging that the items on the shelves in the two countries can differ significantly, some products are simply better value back home.
Harry pointed to cornflour at 79p and custard at 59p as examples before checking out the prices of fresh produce.
“Look at the prices of the meat, the milk and butter – everything is so much cheaper [than in Spain],” he said.
Harry highlighted a packet of lean pork mince at £1.89 and bacon at £1.69 as further examples of food that is more pricey.
“Everything is just 10 times’ cheaper,” he summarised.
Writing in response, one TikTok user accepted: “Food is certainly cheaper in the UK, but the quality of life is much better in Spain.”
A second person added: “The independent owned shops tend to charge more in Benidorm in my experience.”
A third noted that Harry may be comparing shelf prices in the UK to import prices in Benidorm.
While a fourth defended Spain, slamming Harry: “Absolute bull, if you go to inland Spain’s non-tourist areas it’s a lot cheaper, the same in restaurants where there’s a tourist menu and a non-tourist menu, sorry I disagree.”
