Following the recent election, Senedd committees have begun meeting in Cardiff Bay to shape the direction of the Welsh Parliament in the months ahead.
Chaired by Jayne Bryant, Senedd member for Casnewydd Islwyn, the health and social care committee is the only committee allocated to Welsh Labour.
Its members include Safa Elhassan, Sara Crowley, Becca Martin, and Matthew Jones from Plaid Cymru, along with Reform UK’s Gareth Thomas, Nigel Williams, and Claire Archibald, and Conservative MS Natasha Asghar.
The committee has met twice since it was set up, with most of its discussions held in private.
The legislation committee, established on June 16, has met three times.
One of its recent items of business was the Representation of the People (Electoral Registration without Applications) (Electoral Reform) (Wales) Regulations 2026.
Chaired by Sarah Cooper-Lesadd of Reform UK, the committee includes Adrian Mason (Reform), Beca Brown, Kiera Marshall, and Peredur Owen Griffiths (Plaid Cymru), Peter Fox (Conservative), and Huw Thomas (Welsh Labour).
The finance committee has also met three times since its formation.
Its members include Sam Rowlands (Conservative), Lyn Ackerman, Sera Evans, and Elfed Williams (Plaid Cymru), Iain McIntosh and Benjamin Hodge McKenna (Reform UK), and Huw Thomas (Labour).
In its first meeting, the committee questioned finance minister Elin Jones about the supplementary budget.
The public accounts and public administration committee has met twice.
Reform UK member Andrew Griffin chairs the committee, with Cai Parry-Jones (Reform), Anna Nicholl, Alun Cox, and Carrie Harper (Plaid Cymru), Andrew RT Davies (Conservative), and Shav Taj (Labour) also serving.
At the committee’s first meeting, Mr Griffin said: “The people of Wales rightly expect public money to be spent effectively, public services to be delivered efficiently, and public bodies to be open and accountable for the decisions they make.
“Our role is to ask the necessary questions, follow the evidence wherever it leads, and ensure that lessons are learned when things go wrong.”
Other committees have also started work in recent weeks.
The early years, young people, and education committee, chaired by Sera Evans of Plaid Cymru, has met once so far.
Its members include Beca Brown and Mair Rowlands (Plaid Cymru), Catherine Cullen, Claire Johnson-Wood, and Art Wright (Reform UK), Lynne Neagle (Labour), and Sam Rowlands (Conservative).
The committee laid out its remit for the upcoming Senedd term, focusing on early years, education, skills, and children’s health and wellbeing, including their social care.
The climate change, environment, sustainability, and rural affairs committee is chaired by James Evans of Reform UK.
Members include Gareth Beer and David Mills (Reform UK), John Davies, Niamh Salkeld, and Anna Nicholl (Plaid Cymru), Andrew RT Davies (Conservative), Paul Rock (Green Party), and Vikki Howells (Labour).
The business committee, responsible for organising Senedd proceedings, is chaired by Llywydd Huw Irranca-Davies and includes Heledd Fychan (Plaid Cymru), Llŷr Powell (Reform UK), Lynne Neagle (Labour), and Paul Davies (Conservative).
It has already met 10 times since the election to discuss items such as the appointment of Senedd commissioners, committee remits and sizes, and the inclusion of MSs not in a political group on committees.
