Cwmbran Magistrates’ Court heard how Ford Transit van driver Ben Cheshire, 36, pleaded guilty to committing the offence on the A472 Lower Race in Pontypool on March 5.
The offence was detected by an automatic camera device.
Magistrates fined him £623.
The court said the penalty would have been £934 had he not entered a guilty plea.
Cheshire, of St Ambrose Close, Dinas Powys was also ordered to pay £130 in costs and a £249 victim surcharge.
In addition, his driving licence was endorsed with six penalty points.
The total financial penalty imposed was £1,002.
