Sainsbury’s confirms major change to Nectar rewards for customers

Bosses say ‘you only need to spend £1 to start earning’

Sainsbury’s shoppers who buy items online are being reminded of an important step that means they leave nothing important unclaimed at the checkout. It comes as a major change to Nectar rewards has been confirmed.

The supermarket has widened its deal with delivery app Uber so customers can earn rewards on ‘eligible’ grocery items ordered via Uber Eats – whether it’s a last-minute dinner dash or a top-up of household essentials. Miss the step at checkout, though, and you’ll be leaving loyalty points behind.

Shoppers must type in their full Nectar card number during checkout on the Uber Eats app or website, because points won’t be added later. The new points collection is being switched on through participating Sainsbury’s stores listed on Uber Eats, with the rollout said to cover more than 1,300 locations across the UK (as reported by creatorzine.com).

Qualifying points should land in your account within 28 days, and you only need to spend £1 to start earning. Under the scheme, shoppers collect one Nectar point per £1 spent on eligible Sainsbury’s products ordered through Uber Eats.

Items such as gift vouchers, baby milk, lottery tickets, tobacco, vapes and nicotine products, proprietary medicines, plus spirits and liqueurs don’t qualify. There are also extra rules around alcohol in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The move builds on Nectar’s existing relationship with Uber, which already lets members swap points for vouchers to use on Uber rides and Uber Eats orders. In other words, you can earn points on a Sainsbury’s grocery order, then later trade your Nectar balance for money off Uber.

To redeem points for Uber, Nectar members need to head into the Nectar app, open the “Partners” section and choose Uber. By racking up your rewards, shoppers can get their essential orders and save money off a future Uber ride – or put the points towards their next Uber Eats treat instead

How to make sure you don’t miss out

  • Open Uber Eats, choose a participating Sainsbury’s store, then shop as normal.
  • At checkout, paste in your full Nectar number before you hit pay

Katie Hunter, Uber Eats general manager for grocery and retail in the UK, said: “We know how much Uber Eats customers love Nectar, so bringing points directly to their Sainsbury’s orders was a no-brainer. Now, they can collect Nectar points on all their Sainsbury’s essentials as well as spending them across the entire Uber app.

“It’s all about delivering flexibility, convenience and value for customers right alongside their favourite groceries.” Mark Given, Sainsbury’s chief technology, marketing and data officer, added that this is “another way of helping customers get more from Nectar”.
