The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed it has hired Professor David Strain as DWP Chief Medical Advisor, with Prof Strain vowing to turn “evidence” into “practical improvements” for people living with long-term health conditions
The Department for Work and Pensions has announced a significant appointment, promising to support benefits claimants and deliver “improvements” for individuals living with long-term health conditions. The DWP has confirmed the recruitment of Professor David Strain as its Chief Medical Advisor.
Prof Strain arrives at the DWP from the University of Exeter, the NHS and the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST), where he has held the position of Thematic Research Lead for Health. In his new role, Prof Strain has committed to supporting individuals with “long-term health conditions”.
He has pledged to translate “evidence” into “practical improvements” for those living with chronic health problems.

Throughout his career he has had numerous senior leadership positions, including Chair of the British Medical Association Board of Science and Medical Advisor to Action for ME, the DWP has confirmed in a press release announcing the appointment, reports Birmingham Live.
According to the DWP, as Chief Medical Advisor, Professor Strain will deliver clinical leadership and specialist guidance to underpin the Department’s activities, helping to guarantee that clinical evidence and expertise shape policy development and service provision.
Prof Strain said: “I am delighted to be joining DWP as Chief Medical Advisor.
“Throughout my career I have been passionate about turning evidence into practical improvements for people, particularly those living with long-term health conditions.
“I look forward to working with colleagues across the Department and its clinical community to strengthen the contribution clinical professionals make to DWP’s work and to the people we serve.”
Prof Strain will take over from Dr Gail Allsopp in the role. He has also previously served as Chair of the British Medical Association Board of Science and Medical Advisor to Action for ME.
