HMRC Child Benefit cut off for many parents across the UK – what you need to know:
- Thousands of parents face having their Child Benefit payments withdrawn from today, Tuesday, September 1.
- Child Benefit provides £27.05 weekly for the first child and £17.90 for additional children. The benefit can be claimed by those responsible for children under 16, or under 20 if they continue in approved education or training.
- Qualifying courses include A-Levels, NVQs and home education, though university or BTEC qualifications are not eligible. Once your child leaves their approved education or training, payments will stop.
- The cut-off date for Child Benefit payments to end was yesterday, Monday, August 31. Parents with children aged 16 or over who are remaining in approved education should have informed HMRC by this date.
- If you’ve missed the deadline you should contact HMRC as soon as possible to restart or update your claim, if your child is staying in approved education or training.
- More than seven million families presently receive Child Benefit. To qualify, the child must normally live with you, or you must contribute at least the equivalent amount towards their maintenance.
- There is no limit on the number of children you can claim Child Benefit for, although only one person may claim where two people are caring for the same child.
