A Greek air force jet has crashed at an aerial show north of Athens, sending plumes of black smoke into the air before several thousand spectators. There were no immediate reports of injuries among the attendees following the crash of the twin-seat Phantom F4 jet.
Air force officials said it was not immediately clear whether pilots had managed to eject before the crash. A water-dropping helicopter hovered over the crash site to contain the fire on the ground.
The incident occurred at Athens Flying Week, an annual air show, at Tanagra air force base, about 40 miles north of Athens. Air force officials in Greece made no immediate comment on the status of the two airmen, noting that rescue crews were hampered by the fire on the grounds the base.
Eleven water-dropping planes and helicopters assisted 85 firefighters in an effort to contain the blaze.
