Maurice Middleton was thrown against a shop by a woman driving 48mph in a 30mph zone

A family say they have been left ‘shattered’ after a grandad was killed by a speeding driver on a visit to the shop. Maurice Middleton, 65, was hit by a car and pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.
The incident happened on Great Hampton Street in Hockley on July 21, 2024. BirminghamLive reports he had nipped out to buy a paper and cigarettes for his wife while she was cooking dinner.
He was thrown against a shop by the impact of the collision with an Audi A3, being driven at 48mph in a 30mph zone.
Issuing the first photo of Mr Middleton, West Midlands Police reminded drivers of the “responsibility they carry every time they get behind the wheel”.
His family issued a devastating tribute sharing how their lives will never be the same.
They said: “Maurice was a brilliant, kind and generous man who was loved by everyone that he met. His death has completely shattered us a family.
“He was our rock; our king and he is truly loved and missed so much every day. Maurice was the centre of our family, the glue that held us all together and that is why his death has completely devastated us because it has left such a big hole in our hears that nothing and none can ever fill.”
Shanise Hussain, 27, who had worked in a caring role, was jailed for causing death by dangerous driving. She had been driving an Audi A3 at speed at around 2.45pm when she struck Mr Middleton.
Hussain, of West Drive, Handsworth, had swerved to avoid a Jaguar in the nearside lane as it indicated and moved into her lane suddenly. She then smashed into the central reservation and careered into two pedestrians on the pavement.
Hussain was travelling at 48mph in a 30mph limit. She had also pressed the accelerator instead of the brake and careered onto the pavement.
The second pedestrian suffered minor head and hand injuries. Hussain was jailed for four years and six months at Birmingham Crown Court last Thursday (September 3).
She was also disqualified from driving for eight years and three months. The Jaguar driver was previously convicted of careless driving in relation to his involvement.
Detective Sergeant Richard Evans, from West Midlands Police’s Serious Collison Investigation Unit, said: “This was a devastating incident which resulted in the loss of a life.
“Our thoughts are first and foremost with the victim’s family, who have been supported by specially trained officers throughout this extremely difficult time. I would take this opportunity to remind all road users of the responsibility they carry every time they get behind the wheel.
“The decisions made in a moment can have life-changing consequences for many people.”
