Road closed for hours as massive lorry overturns

by David Jones

The A470 was closed for several hours after a lorry overturned causing major traffic disruption on the key route

The A470 was closed for several hours after a huge lorry overturned. The incident began on Friday afternoon when the lorry toppled over on a bend along the stretch between Betws-y-Coed and Dolwyddelan.

Emergency services attended the scene and the main route was partially closed with a single lane blocked due to the obstruction. It is believed nobody was injured in the collision, however the sheer size of the vehicle meant a substantial recovery operation was required.

Given the large task, police fully closed the road at around 4pm with traffic redirected along alternative routes. Several recovery vehicles were required and could be seen lined up along the A470.

Photographer Lynn Arrowsmith captured the enormity of the operation. The work continued for several hours, with crews still on site at night.

Lynn was informed that part of the delay was caused by a forklift truck breaking down, forcing crews to wait for a replacement to be brought to the scene.

The lorry was eventually cleared and the road was able to reopen to motorists in the early hours of Saturday morning.
