Kirstie Allsopp has criticised Earl Spencer ahead of the launch of his controversial memoir, Swan Song, which details the final years and heartbreaking death of his late sister, Diana, Princess of Wales.
Taking to X on Thursday (17 September), Kirstie – who is currently recuperating from a serious fall – condemned the Earl, branding him a “hypocrite”.
“Maybe it’s because I’m bed-bound & slightly grumpy anyhow, but the hypocrisy of Charles Spencer making money out of his sister all these years & now attacking The King really gets my goat,” Kirstie posted.
“He made a promise at his sister’s funeral to safeguard her children, and yet he does this?”.
After her post went live, Kirstie received an avalanche of responses, with opinion clearly split. “No @KirstieMAllsopp, he’s selling her out for the money, disgusting man,” one person remarked.
“You’re right. He hasn’t safeguarded anyone,” a second concurred.
“Diana’s grandchildren are old enough to understand all of this. It’s disgusting […] Sorry, but much like Harry, he has done nothing but dine out on Diana’s memory and connection to her. All to make money. It’s vile.”
Meanwhile, others backed the Earl’s right to discuss his sister, reports the Express.
“He is safeguarding her children! ! ! How many years have lies been told & written about Diana by so-called royal biographers! ! ! He has every right to write about his sister & tell the world that side of the story with no palace spin! This is how he protects her children! To make the whole world aware that the Palace f*****g lies every godamn day! ! ! ! ! Let the truth be known!” declared a user on X.
“There have been dozens of books written about Diana over the years from ‘royal experts’ and the likes. All wanting to cash in, yet her own brother writes his memories – 30 years hence – and there’s not enough pearls to go round for the plethora of clutchers,” remarked another.
Kirstie’s post emerged hours after the Daily Mail published a damning extract from the Earl’s memoir, Swan Song.
According to the newspaper, the Earl recounts a dispute with King Charles regarding Diana’s funeral arrangements in 1997, during which the future monarch reportedly stated: “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”
Swan Song is due for publication on September 22; however, the Daily Mail will be publishing excerpts prior to its official launch.
In response to the startling allegation, a palace spokesperson said: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”
