Joshua Emmerson, of 8 Glenbrook Close, Barry, was driving along the A449 on September, 4 2025, when officers were called to reports of a man having a “medical incident”.
Officers were also told there were suspected drugs in the car.
Medical checks were carried out, and when officers asked to search the car, he told them it was locked.
Officers informed him that they would force entry if they had to.
Inside, officers found Class A, B and C drugs – including cocaine, ketamine, cannabis, GHB and methamphetamine – in bags and Tupperware containers.
The total value of the drugs is estimated to be between £1276 and £2296.
Emmerson was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a controlled drug, and told officers “I was made to take them up for Alfie”.
A mobile phone was also found in the vehicle, and message chains discussing the supply of cannabis, cocaine and viagra – for financial gain – were uncovered.
Emmerson was taken to hospital, and his house was also searched.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that Emmerson, 50, has no previous convictions.
He was married for 21 years, and his relationship broke down in 2025.
He is in poor health, and is currently awaiting further treatment for a brain tumour. He is also under the care of a cardiologist.
He also helps care for his mother, who lives in Merthyr Tydfil.
Her Honour Judge Lucy Crowther explained that as he pleaded guilty in the “lower courts” he would be granted one-third credit when it came to sentencing.
Judge Crowther said she would “overlook” Emmerson’s 2007 caution for common assault and treat him as a “person of good character”.
Speaking to the defendant, Judge Crowther said: “How sad it is to see you here at your age”.
Judge Crowther said Emmerson posed a low risk of reoffending and, after considering mitigating factors, imposed a three-year suspended sentence.
As part of the suspended sentence, Emmerson must wear an electronic tag for six months and pay £150 in costs, plus the statutory surcharge.
Judge Crowther also made a confiscation and forfeiture order.
