HMRC has issued a reminder
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued an alert to anyone who holds a National Insurance number.
If you have ever lived or worked in the UK, you will more than likely already have a National Insurance number, even if you are unsure of what it is. Those living in the UK will typically receive a letter containing their National Insurance number shortly before their 16th birthday, sent to the address HMRC holds on record. National Insurance numbers consist of two letters, six digits and a final letter.
In an update posted on X, formerly Twitter, HMRC reminded people of how they can locate their National Insurance number “easily”. The post reads: “Your National Insurance number is just a tap away.
“Keep it secure and download it to your digital wallet. Download the app today to quickly view your National Insurance.”
The HMRC app can also be used to access information about your tax and benefits. In addition, it allows you to update personal details such as your name or address, as well as how HMRC communicates with you. Any correspondence you have submitted to HMRC can also be tracked directly within the app.
Further guidance available on GOV.UK states that the app can be used to check your tax code, your Self Assessment Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), your Annual Tax Summary and employment history, and to identify any gaps in your National Insurance record, amongst a range of other services.
The app also allows users to make payments, set payment reminders, contact HMRC, estimate take-home pay, and claim refunds on any overpaid tax. HMRC adds that it is unable to provide your National Insurance number via telephone or through webchat.
