The school held a tea party on Friday, September 18, to mark the anniversary. Pupils and staff dressed in Victorian-style clothing, played games and took part in activities based on life during the period.
The event followed months of work by pupils, who studied different parts of the school’s history. Each year group was given a separate period to research.
During the summer term, pupils used what they had learnt to create a museum. Members of the school community were invited to visit the museum and see the work produced by the children.
The school was the first Penarth Board School and opened in September 1876. It became Albert Board School in 1899, after this section of Stanwell Road was renamed in honour of Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria.
As part of the anniversary, every pupil received a small white mouse as a keepsake. The item is a symbol from the Victorian freeze at the front of the school.
Headteacher Daniel Bennett said: “It truly is a special occasion of a very special school. The children have loved learning about the history of the school and feel proud to be part of the history of a school that stretches back 150 years”.
Izzy Chambers, a Year 6 pupil, said: “Albert Primary School’s 150th Anniversary was so exciting and absolutely amazing! Having a tea party in the hall with everyone, while wearing Victorian clothing, really was something. From the strict Victorian classrooms, to making peg dolls, and playing Victorian games, we all had a blast on Friday”.
The anniversary gave pupils an opportunity to learn about the people, places and events connected with the school’s past.
Today, Albert Primary School says it values everyone’s uniqueness, embraces their qualities and supports them to become the best version of themselves.
The school also aims to promote a sense of belonging, where everyone is included, respected and feels safe to make mistakes.
