6th Penarth Guides will mark its 100th anniversary on September 28, 2026, with a special centenary tea party. The group first began in 1926.
Eloise, unit leader at 6th Penarth Guides, said: “This is a fantastic milestone for 6th Penarth Guides to achieve and we’re so pleased to be able to mark this occasion.”
The centenary celebrations will include traditional games, tea and cake, and a look back at the group’s long history. Guides have already kicked off the celebrations by creating a time capsule, and have written to the King in the hope of receiving a 100th birthday message.
The group is also planning to display old Guide uniforms and memorabilia, and is appealing for photographs and stories from past members to help tell its story.
As part of the celebrations, the Guides recently attended a special camp themed around Guiding through the decades. They took part in classic activities such as pioneering, friendship bracelet making, and capture the flag.
The unit said: “It was lovely seeing today’s Guides enjoying traditions that connect them with the girls who came before them.”
The unit hopes the anniversary will not only honour the past but also secure the future of Girlguiding in the area.
The unit said: “Like many Brownie and Guide units locally, we really need more adult volunteers.
“Some groups in the area are struggling to continue because there simply aren’t enough volunteers, and some are even facing closure.
“We hope our 100th birthday is not only a chance to celebrate everything the unit has meant to generations of girls, but also to show what Guiding still offers girls today.
“Hopefully, it might inspire a few more local adults to get involved and help make sure opportunities like these are still here for the next generation.”
The centenary party will also include a badge ceremony for a Guide who is the first in the unit to receive the Guide Gold Award, one of the highest honours in Girlguiding.
Organisers are keen to hear from former members and anyone with stories or memorabilia related to the unit’s 100-year history.
