Stephen Gomes, an AA Rosette winner and former Great British Menu contender, is launching a new food-to-go concept called Avani in Dinas Powys.
Mr Gomes, who is officially recognised as the most outstanding Asian chef in the UK, has partnered with South Wales hospitality entrepreneur Shakil Syed to deliver high-quality, affordable Indian cuisine.
The venture will open on Cardiff Road in late October or early November.
Meaning ‘earth,’ Avani aims to redefine the traditional Indian takeaway by offering reimagined British-Indian classics and regional specialities at everyday prices.
The menu features options for both lunch and dinner, with a focus on sustainability and zero food waste.
Stephen Gomes said: “Avani is turning elite flavour chemistry into a weapon against food waste, and that efficiency lets us keep our prices incredibly accessible.
“We are packing intense culinary talent into an affordable, premium food-to-go format here in Wales.
“We want to prove that luxury convenience and world class spice design don’t require a massive restaurant bill.”
The concept is divided into three parts.
From noon, the deli serves spice-infused sandwiches, wraps, and salads until they sell out.
From 4pm to 10pm, the evening takeaway menu offers chef-prepared hot dishes for collection on the way home.
Avani also features a retail bazaar, open from noon to 10pm, selling small-batch chutneys, house-blended spices, sauces, and an ultra-premium ‘heat and eat’ range.
A key part of Avani’s model is its circular kitchen, which turns surplus deli ingredients into evening meals or retail products, minimising food waste and keeping prices low.
The launch is expected to create up to eight new jobs in Dinas Powys.
Shakil Syed already employs 25 people across South Wales and views Avani as a long-term community investment.
The launch will begin with an invitation-only ‘Village First’ preview night for residents, business owners, and regional critics before opening to the public.
Stephen Gomes is known for his work in botanical distillations and pure spice extraction.
He previously owned Moksh and recently won the King Chef Award in India.
Mr Gomes continues to consult and run restaurant and hotel kitchens in London.
Shakil Syed operates a portfolio of hospitality and retail businesses in South Wales.
Avani will be located at 16 Cardiff Road, Dinas Powys, CF64 4JS.
The deli will open from noon until sold out, the hot takeaway will run from 4pm to 10pm, and the retail bazaar will trade from noon to 10pm daily.
The launch is expected to bring a fresh, sustainable approach to high-quality Indian cuisine, catering to commuters.
