More than 2,300lbs of breakfast sausages have been recalled over fears they may contain a foreign material that could cause cuts or choking.
Illinois-based food manufacturer Fontanini Foods LLC issued the alert for 2,320lbs of its frozen pork breakfast sausages, called ‘Fontanini PORK SAUSAGE LINKS,’ after finding the sausages may contain ‘clear, hard plastic.’
The company discovered the problem after receiving complaints from two customers who reported finding plastic in the product.
The sausages were produced on June 23, 2026, and shipped to distributors in four states: California, Florida, Michigan and Nevada.
From there, the sausages were sent to food establishments such as restaurants.
No illnesses or injuries linked to the sausages have been reported to date.
Health officials have urged restaurants not to serve the sausages and to throw them out immediately or contact the seller for a full refund.
In previous recalls, health officials have warned that hard plastic shards in products can cause cuts to the mouth or teeth if consumed.

They can also become stuck in the throat, posing a potential choking hazard.
In rare and life-threatening cases, doctors warn that the shards can also cause life-threatening complications if they enter and then pierce the intestines. Doctors call this a perforated bowel and warn it can trigger complications such as sepsis.
The recall was announced by the Food Safety and Inspection Service, which posted the alert from the sausage supplier.
The following products are subject to recall: 10lb cardboard box cases containing ‘Fontanini PORK SAUSAGE LINKS’ with ‘ITEM 393’ printed on the box and ‘PACKED ON 06/23/2026’ printed on the shipping label.
While it is unclear how the plastic ended up in the sausages, similar incidents have involved food becoming contaminated with plastic during the production process.
This can happen if machinery breaks during production, leading to plastic being accidentally added to the sausages.
In a similar scenario in March, the FDA issued a recall of four types of milk sold by convenience store-giant Wawa after plastic shards were discovered on the production line for the products.
The rest stop icon recalled nearly 22,000 units of four milk products, including Wawa-branded reduced fat milk 2 percent; Double Dutch Chocolate Milk; Cookies & Cream Milk; and Chocolate low-fat milk.
The products were sold in 16oz (pint) plastic containers and are in the refrigerated section of the stores.

They were recalled in March after being placed on shelves in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania.
The recall was marked as Class II, or ‘a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.’
