Cardiff Airport team wins international accessibility award

The team took home the airport category at the Travel For Every Body Awards 2026, organised by Selling Travel, which celebrates individuals and organisations driving progress in accessible and inclusive travel.

They were recognised ahead of other global finalists including Liverpool John Lennon, Manchester, Orlando International, and Victoria International airports.

Angela Hewitson, terminal manager at Cardiff Airport, said: “We are incredibly proud of our Special Assistance team for achieving this award.

“It is a well-deserved recognition of the professionalism, compassion and commitment they demonstrate every day.

“Over the past 12 months, we have supported more than 32,540 passengers, a significant increase on the previous year, while continuing to deliver high standards of care for those who rely on our assistance.

“To be recognised alongside airports from the UK, Canada and the United States, and ultimately be named the winner, is a fantastic achievement.

“This award reflects the hard work of the team and the positive difference they make to the journeys of thousands of passengers every year.”

The awards are now in their second year and highlight excellence across the travel sector.

They also aim to keep accessible travel front and centre within the industry.

Winners were chosen by an independent panel of accessibility specialists, advocates, and travel industry experts.

A recent study by the National Centre for Accessible Transport found that 92 per cent of disabled people face barriers when travelling.

The issues raised included poor assistance, inaccessible infrastructure, and a lack of reliable accessibility information.

Cardiff Airport’s Special Assistance team works closely with airlines, security staff, and other operational teams to ensure passengers receive the support they need for a smooth journey.

Cardiff Airport currently offers flights to a wide range of destinations, including European cities, popular holiday destinations, and direct transatlantic services to Toronto with WestJet.
