Barry’s ‘crazy, perfect’ summer enjoyed by its newest faces

The overhaul of businesses has given locals a range of new choices to support during their visits.

The first to open on the Island was Farnhams, taking the place of longstanding chippy Boofy’s, expanding a business that already has shops in Cowbridge, Fontygary and Boverton that draw critical acclaim.

From its place under the Western Shelter, it brings a wealth of experience to the Island, and a welcome slew of spring sunshine allowed the business to have a decent start to its tenure in Barry.

The business said: “We’ve been so pleased with how our first summer on Barry Island has gone. We’ve received such a warm welcome from locals, visitors and fellow businesses.

“We were very lucky with the lovely weather, which made for a busy couple of months.

“It’s been great seeing so many people enjoying Barry Island, and we’re really grateful for everyone’s support.

“We look forward to many more summers.”

Another new face on Barry Island that’s no stranger to the Vale is Fablas.

It moved into the old lifeguard station on the seafront after it had sat empty since September, 2025, bringing with it sweet treats that have gained it recognition across South Wales from its existing shops in Penarth, Cowbridge, Porthcawl, and Caerphilly.

This highly anticipated opening has proved extremely popular with customers new and old, giving many a reason to venture down to the Island.

It said: “Opening our Barry Island store, our fifth location across South Wales, has honestly been the perfect move for Fablas.

“Barry Island is an iconic location for more than one reason, and we couldn’t have asked for a better first summer. With what has felt like endless heatwaves, jam-packed beaches, queues out of the door and coachloads of visitors arriving from all over the UK, the response has been incredible.

“Opening on the Island has introduced Fablas to so many new customers and has really helped put our name on the map across South Wales and beyond.

“For that, we will always be incredibly grateful to the Barry Island community, its residents and every single visitor who has walked through our doors and supported us during our first season.

“We are so proud to now call Barry Island home and are very excited for what’s still to come.”

The final addition to Barry Island this summer may be the most highly anticipated.

The Morio Lounge saw a spate of pushbacks from delays in utility installation that prevented its opening throughout spring, but locals flooded in once the doors were open.

The venue has created around 30 new jobs in the area and has completely reimagined the once-abandoned toilet block in which it sits, bringing a little more life to Nell’s Point.

Management at this lounge bar said their opening was “eye-opening” and “crazy.”

They wished to simply “thank the people of Barry for coming in and supporting [them]” and that “the guests made it what it was.”
