Liam Jones, 34, of Cardiff Road, Barry appeared before Cardiff Magistrates’ Court accused of intentionally strangling the complainant on September 21.
The defendant faces a separate charge of assault by beating, alleging that he assaulted her on August 20.
He was remanded in custody.
Jones is due to return to Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on October 9 for a mention hearing.
A trial date of November 19 was set.
