Wales breaking news plus weather and traffic updates (Sunday, October 18)

Since Friday, October 16 residents have been to keep their windows and doors closed and to avoid the area after an oil spill in the River Taff. Natural Resources Wales officers identified the pollutant as kerosene that streched over a mile of the river at Glan Y Llyn, Taff’s Well, Gwaelod-y-garth, and Tongwynlais.

The kerosene was entering the surface water drainage system which leads to a culvert into a tributary of the Taff.

The amount of fuel now entering watercourses has reduced significantly since Friday and work is continuing to contain and remove fuel from the site’s drainage system.

As of 6.30pm on Saturday evening, approximately 4km of the River Taff appeared to be impacted and odour has reduced.

Public Health Wales is advising the local community:

• to keep doors and windows closed while the smell is present and open them again while the smell has passed.

• Please avoid contact with water in contaminated areas.

• It is unlikely that anyone with kerosene on their skin or clothes for a short period of time will have any ill effects.

• If you have got kerosene on your skin, remove soiled clothing, and wash the affected area with lukewarm water and soap.

• Anyone who is unwell should seek medical advice by calling NHS 111 Wales
