‘As we change, Jesus stays the same no matter what’

When they first came in back in the early 1980s I recall anyone who had one thought they were the bee’s knees because they could record a TV programme on one channel and watch another at the same time.

When the tape was full, we simply wiped it and started again.

We could even go out to a video rental store and rent a VHS tape of the latest blockbuster film to watch in the comfort of our own home.

The first recorders were huge and took up most of your living room space if you had one but as with anything, over time, they became much smaller and more efficient.

Then we had the advent of DVDs which allowed us to record much more and again, we could use re-recordable DVD discs which we could reuse once we had watched everything we had recorded.

And currently, we have all-singing and all-dancing HD recorders which will record TV programmes straight onto a hard drive with hundreds of hours of recording space.

TVs themselves are now amazingly clever and satellite TV again allows us to record and delete anything and everything.

Everything changes. There is always something new coming.

It can be hard to stay with the latest trends, be it clothes music or even what words we say.

People used the word groovy all the time in the 1960s? But if we said ‘cool’ today that would be totally normal. Well this world is constantly changing what’s cool now doesn’t stay cool forever.

We change too.

As people we get older, our appearances change, our habits and our interests all change.

There is however someone who stays the same no matter what. He is not subject to the latest fads and fashions and that person is Jesus.

In the Old Testament in Malachi 3 and verse 6, God says ‘I am the Lord, and I do not change.’

In Hebrews 13 and verse 8 we read that ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.’

He does not change with the times which is very reassuring. His character, and his love for us remains constant.

Technology changes, we change but Jesus never does and he wants us to turn to him when we get things in our lives that we struggle to deal with.

Will we do that?
