Aberthaw Power Station fire extinguished after 24 hours

by David Jones

Firefighters from 15 stations across South Wales attended, including crews from Ely, Llantwit Major, Kenfig Hill, Barry, Penarth, Whitchurch, Cardiff Central, Pontypridd, Maindee, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil, New Inn, Cwmbran, Tonypandy and Bridgend.

At the height of the incident, eight fire appliances, four water bowsers and two aerial hydraulic platforms were deployed, supported by a range of specialist equipment, as crews worked throughout the day to contain the blaze.

Residents in nearby areas, including Rhoose and Font-y-Gary, were urged to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution due to smoke. Group manager Tony Redman said at the time that although much of the smoke was being carried out to sea by the wind, it could still impact surrounding communities depending on conditions.

Dramatic images and video footage shared on social media showed thick plumes of smoke rising high into the sky above the power station, visible from miles around and prompting concern among local residents.

Firefighters remained at the scene well into the night, continuing to tackle hotspots and ensure the site was made safe. Crews eventually left the scene around midnight.

A reinspection was carried out on the morning of July 3, with SWFRS confirming there were no remaining signs of heat, smoke or fire within the building. A formal stop message was issued at 7.57am, marking the conclusion of the incident.

The fire service thanked the local community and partner agencies for their cooperation and support during the operation.

Andrew RT Davies, Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend, said he was “deeply concerned” by the incident and praised the efforts of firefighters. He urged residents to continue following official advice issued during the response.

A spokesperson for CCR Energy said the situation had been managed by emergency services alongside on-site teams, adding that the safety and wellbeing of staff and responders remained the top priority.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, and it is not yet clear what damage has been caused to the site.

Investigations are expected to continue.
