Government scheme for working parents is capped at £2,000 per child in most circumstances
All you need to know as working parents could get up to £2,000 childcare boost:
- Working parents across the UK could be set for boosts of up to £2,000 per child through the government’s Tax-Free Childcare scheme.
- HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) runs the programme for families earning below £100,000 with children aged under 11, or under 16 if disabled. The savings can be used towards school clubs, childminders and other wraparound childcare provision.
- A recent government post explains: “The government adds £2 for every £8 you pay in, up to £2,000 a year per child (or up to £4,000 if your child is disabled).” Parents must reconfirm their eligibility every three months after applying online.
- According to the latest figures, 602,000 families were using Tax-Free Childcare for 745,000 children in June 2026. Thousands of childcare providers now accept the scheme as payment.
- Once an account is opened, parents can use funds immediately or save them for later. Any unused money can be withdrawn at any time.
