Arth Strength and Conditioning in Penarth marks anniversary

Located on Glebe Street, the studio has grown to more than 200 members since opening nearly two years ago. Co-founder Laura Payne, a former Wales rugby player, said the aim was to create a welcoming, community-led fitness space in the town.

“We wanted something that brought people together as well as improving fitness,” she said. “It’s about building friendships as well as strength.”

The gym delivers coach-led 45-minute strength and cardio classes throughout the day, designed to suit busy schedules.

Sessions range from weight-based strength training to high-intensity cardio workouts, with additional classes tailored for older adults, children and teenagers.

“We’re trying to get every age group in Penarth moving,” Laura said. “We’ve got families where everyone comes here from grandparents to kids.”

The studio is also largely female-led, with a team of women coaches, and has become particularly popular with women in the local community, although it remains open to all.

Alongside its fitness offering, Arth has made charity work a core part of its identity. The team has already raised £1,500 this year for various charities, with a major fundraising event planned for July 4 in support of Velindre Cancer Centre.

Participants in the event are invited to complete a six-kilometre walk or run every hour for 10 hours, with the option to take part in as many sessions as they choose.

“We’re hoping to raise at least another £1,000,” Laura said.

It’s a cause that means a lot to us, especially as my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer.”

Last year, the gym raised £3,000 for various charities, reinforcing its role as a community hub.

Founded by Laura and business partner Hannah Jones, the studio also promotes Welsh language and culture, reflecting the identity of the local area.

Looking ahead, the team plans to expand its class offering, including introducing yoga, while continuing to focus on community wellbeing in Penarth.

The team also hopes to grow its membership further, strengthen local partnerships and continue using fitness as a way to bring people together and support important causes across the community.
