Gin 64, on Victoria Road, has stopped serving at its Penarth venue, with its official website and social media pages appearing to have been taken down. A notice taped to the front door informs passers‑by that the shop has stopped trading.

Staff at neighbouring businesses say the bar has been quiet for some time. And that they had not seen Gin 64’s owner for around three weeks, describing the sudden silence at the once‑bustling bar as “strange” and “sad for the street”.
The closure comes as another blow to Penarth’s hospitality scene after a series of recent announcements.
Just this week, popular takeaway Saggor revealed it would be closing after serving the community for 27 years, prompting an outpouring of tributes from loyal customers.
Earlier last month, Refresh juice and wellness bar confirmed it was shutting its doors.
The news about Gin 64 will add to concerns about how rising costs and changing habits are affecting small independent venues in the town.
Gin 64 has been one of Penarth’s best‑known night‑time businesses in recent years. The independent bar operated seven days a week and built a reputation for its extensive gin selection, regular tasting events and creative approach to drinks.
In March 2023 the bar drew national interest when it launched “environmental” menus embedded with plant seeds, allowing customers to plant the menu paper and grow garnishes for their drinks.
The venue’s success was recognised twice by the Corporate LiveWire Prestige Awards, which named Gin 64 its Gin Bar of the Year in Wales in consecutive years. Judges praised the bar’s service, innovative practices and ethical, environmentally‑minded approach to trading.
The sudden closure will therefore come as a surprise to many regulars who saw the bar as a cornerstone of Penarth’s independent food and drink offer. At the time of writing, no formal public statement has been issued by the owners.
Gin 64 first opened its doors in 2018 and quickly became a fixture of the town’s nightlife, meaning its disappearance from Victoria Road will surely be felt by locals who made it part of their weekly routine.
