Barry couple threatened at knife point in New Year’s attack

by Editor

26-year-old Nikki Perkins and her partner Jonathon Gunstone, 27, had driven down to Barry Waterfront where they decided to enjoy their New Year’s celebrations as a couple.

Nikki said: “I was feeling down about the loss of my mum (she passed away 6 years ago in April). The holidays aren’t easy to fully enjoy anymore.

“I enjoy going to the Waterfront as I feel close to her there, so we decided to drive down. We parked outside the construction site. We laughed, watched videos on my partner’s tablet and played a game we both enjoy playing together called Hearthstone.”

Jonathon said: “A guy comes up to the driver’s window and asks, ‘Are you waiting for someone?’ My partner mistakenly said no. That is when he went around to the back of the car, and we heard a loud bang.

“I assumed he started kicking the car or something. He came around to the passenger side door and I can see he’s half hiding a knife in his hand and saying, ‘What is your problem bruv?’ ‘Come out and fight me.’

“I told my partner to drive and that is when he stabbed at the window, causing a nasty scratch. Luckily, we drove away. We only managed to get across to the roundabout as we realised both back tyres were slashed.”

However, they have since been told by police that the CCTV footage of the man is too low quality to identify the suspect.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said:

“We can confirm the incident was reported just after 2am on Wednesday, January 1.

“Officers were dispatched and carried out a search of the area immediately following the incident.

“In the days that followed they also made CCTV enquiries, but these have proved negative.”

The couple are still shaken up by the event.

Nikki said: “This attack was terrifying even when I didn’t know he had a knife just so thankful that the car doors were locked, and we got away without being hurt.

“What worries me most is that this man is still out there as the police have not found him yet.”

South Wales Police have asked for anyone with any information to get in touch and quote reference number 2500000182 or to contact 101.
