Barry history talks to cover witches, objects and Christmas

The Victorian Barry Experience is hosting three events at Coaltrains Coffee Shop Gallery in Barry, which will run from October to December and begin at 11am, each lasting around an hour.

Councillor Shirley Hodges, who co-founded the Victorian Barry Experience with Councillor Nic Hodges, said: “We’re grateful to Al at Coaltrains for inviting us back and giving us the opportunity to share Barry’s history with the local community.

“We hope people will join us and discover something about Barry’s past that they didn’t know.”

The talks begin on Wednesday, October 21 with Cadoxton Witches, an exploration of the folklore, beliefs and stories surrounding Cadoxton.

On Wednesday, November 18, The Story of Barry in Five Items will take the audience on a journey through the town’s past using five objects.

The final talk, Christmas in Barry, takes place on Wednesday, December 16, and will offer a festive look at how Barry celebrated Christmas in years gone by.

The Victorian Barry Experience was established in 2018 by local councillors, Shirley and Nic Hodges, to make Barry’s history accessible and enjoyable by exploring the people, places and events that helped shape the town.

Coaltrains Coffee Shop Gallery, located on Barry train station, hosts a range of talks and musical performances for free during the week.

It has previously welcomed Victorian Barry Experience talks on topics such as food and drink in Victorian Barry, the development of docks, and the town’s industry and railways.
