The popular South Wales seaside resort is expected to draw crowds throughout the late May bank holiday and half term week, with a packed calendar of family entertainment, beachside fun and special events.

Barry Island is best known for Whitmore Bay, a crescent of golden sand backed by a lively promenade offering cafés, amusements and classic seaside attractions.

The beach has once again secured Seaside Award status for 2026, recognising its high standards of cleanliness and visitor facilities.

Barry Island Pleasure Park remains a firm favourite with its mix of rides, stalls and classic amusements.

The park is open daily from 12pm during school holidays, weather permitting.

Visitors are advised to check the attraction’s Facebook page before travelling, as poor weather may affect opening times.

Just beyond the main beach, Jackson’s Bay offers a quieter spot and remains dog-friendly year-round.

Cold Knap Bay, on the other side of the headland, provides a peaceful pebble beach with some sand visible at low tide.

Transport for Wales operates direct train services from Cardiff Central to Barry Island, with the journey taking around 31 to 36 minutes.

Trains begin running from 5.15am and children under 11 travel free at all times, making rail a convenient and cost-effective option for families.

Drivers are reminded that parking charges now apply in many parts of Barry Island, including Paget Road, Breaksea Drive, Friars Road and Station Approach Road.

Arriving before 10am is recommended, as parking is free before this time and spaces fill up quickly during peak periods.

Food and drink options include Marco’s Café—made famous by Gavin & Stacey—John’s Café, Whitmore + Jackson, Hangfire Southern Kitchen, and Paletta Pizzeria.

The promenade’s Western Shelter area also offers a range of ice cream outlets and fish and chip shops.

Fans of the BBC comedy series Gavin & Stacey can visit key filming locations around the island, including Trinity Street, Marco’s Café, Island Leisure Amusement Arcade, Barry Island Pleasure Park and The Colcot Arms pub.

The official Gavin & Stacey bus tour operates daily except Tuesdays, departing from Barry Island Station.

Tours last 3.5 hours and visit all major filming locations, with tickets priced at £35 for adults and £27.50 for children.

Events during half term include the Danter & Sons Funfair at Pencoedtre Fields in Cadoxton, expected to run for a similar duration as in 2025, which was from May 24 to June 1.

Just after half term, the Barry Island Food Festival returns on June 6 and 7 with street food, live music and an indie market.

Barry Island also offers scenic coastal walks, including routes to Nell’s Point and Friars Point, as well as activities such as adventure golf, a climbing wall, and the RNLI Visitor Centre and Shop.

The RNLI centre is one of the UK’s first dedicated drowning prevention centres, offering educational resources on sea safety and rescue.

For families travelling with pets, it’s important to note that dogs are not permitted on Whitmore Bay between May and September.

Jackson’s Bay remains dog-friendly throughout the year.
