Emergency services were called to the seaside resort on Bank Holiday Monday, May 25, after a male was stabbed in the leg during an incident on the island.
Officers initially said the injury was not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing, but the victim’s condition later worsened and he has since undergone a life-changing leg amputation at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
The boy, from Cardiff, remains in critical care in hospital. Detectives say his family are “distraught” and are being supported by a specially trained family liaison officer while the investigation continues.
South Wales Police has now confirmed that 18-year-old Idris Ahmed, from Riverside, Cardiff, has been charged with Section 18 wounding with intent and possession of a knife or sharply pointed article in a public place. He is due to appear at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court this morning, Saturday, June 6.
Detective Inspector Sarah Lee described the extent of the victim’s injuries as “absolutely devastating” and praised the response of officers working on the case. She said the investigation involves reviewing hundreds of hours of CCTV footage and tracing witnesses who were in the area at the time.
Police are still appealing for information and witnesses, including anyone who may have filmed what happened on their phones or captured the incident on dashcam.
