Adrian Edros, 37, of Holton Road, Barry is accused of robbing a woman of a mobile phone and £40 cash in Penarth on April 16.
The defendant pleaded guilty not guilty during a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court.
Judge Vanessa Francis set a trial date of October 14 with the case expected to last three days.
Edros was remanded in custody.
He was represented by Adam Sharp with Jac Brown appearing for the prosecution.
