The actor and comedian, from Barry, is documenting his journey in a new BBC programme titled Mike Bubbins: Welsh Learner.

The show follows Mr Bubbins as he reconnects with his roots, revisiting the places that shaped him and meeting the people who inspire his journey.

During his first return to Gladstone Primary School in Barry, he reflects on his upbringing and education, and talks about how important he and his wife felt it was to send their children to a Welsh‑medium school.

Mr Bubbins said: “I was very nervous about my kids going to a Welsh school… but it’s the best thing they ever did.

“They love it.”

Throughout the programme, he meets a host of Welsh stars who support his learning.

Rugby legend Sir Gareth Edwards recalls using Welsh on the pitch with fellow player Barry John.

Sir Gareth said: “We always spoke Welsh to each other in the game.

“Barry would say, ‘Throw it here – I’m going to go left.’

“He’d tell me what he was going to do.”

Later in the show, BBC Radio Wales presenter Eleri Sion agrees to help Mr Bubbins write a St Dwynwen’s card for his wife, and he visits Welsh reggae star Aleighcia Scott to compare notes on learning the language.

Mr Bubbins ends his journey with a personal challenge: spending an entire day speaking only Welsh at Tafwyl, Cardiff’s Welsh-language festival.

The programme is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and aired on BBC One Wales on St David’s Day at 7pm.

Mike Bubbins: Welsh Learner was commissioned by S4C and produced by Cwmni Da for BBC Cymru Wales.
