BBC’s Shift the Thrift with Joanna Page begins today

Shift the Thrift, fronted by Welsh actress Joanna Page and launched today (Monday, April 13), aims to shine a light on the community value of second-hand shopping. The daytime show gives contestants just hours to hunt for hidden treasures in charity shops, upcycle or reimagine them, and sell the improved items for a profit, all in support of good causes.

The team that raises the most money for their chosen charity wins the challenge.

Joanna Page, best known for her role as Stacey Shipman in Gavin and Stacey, brings her trademark warmth to the series. The programme celebrates charity shops, the people behind them, and the growing appetite for sustainable, affordable shopping.

Each episode follows two teams as they search charity shops across UK towns, looking for items with potential—whether clothing, homeware, or furniture. The teams then transform or style their finds before selling them to raise funds.

Episodes also explore the work of shop volunteers and the stories behind the charities they support.

Among the featured organisations is Monmouthshire Upcycle, which welcomed the production crew during filming for an episode set to air later in the series.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We’re passionate about reducing waste and giving people access to affordable, quality items.

“It was a real privilege to showcase that on such a big platform.

“We hope it inspires more people to shop second-hand and get involved.”

Monmouthshire Upcycle encourages the reuse of goods, helping to reduce waste while providing the community with budget-friendly options.

In line with this mission, Shift the Thrift also aims to highlight the broader environmental impact of charity shopping during the current cost-of-living crisis.

With Joanna Page at the helm and several episodes shot in Welsh locations, the show is likely to strike a chord with viewers in Gwent and beyond.

By showcasing the stories behind donated goods, the volunteers who give their time, and the charities they support, Shift the Thrift hopes to inspire audiences to see the true value in second-hand shopping—not just as a way to save money, but as a meaningful way to give back.

Shift the Thrift aired today on BBC One at 2pm, with episodes also expected to be available to catch up on via the BBC iPlayer.
